Requirements

Georgetown University Police Department's mission is to protect the Georgetown University community, ensuring a safe and secure learning and living environment through trusting partnerships and professional police services. The Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) provides security and police services on the Georgetown University Main and Medical Center campuses and off campus properties. Utilizing foot patrols, vehicles and bicycles, the officers patrol the campus twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

The Communications Officer is one of the first line contacts of the Department of Public Safety and is responsible for service to all members of the University community who contact us, including students, faculty, staff, visitors, and neighboring community, MPD, DCFEMS, GERMS, and various other external agencies; answers and appropriately provides advice and/or dispatch for all calls and visitors for services, but not limited to:

  • Crime, public safety emergencies, medical emergencies, fire/fire alarms, after hours facilities issues, neighboring assistance, escort services, MPD reimbursable detail, lockouts, and general information.
  • Operate and control FCC licensed multi-unit radio system for dispatch, emergency management, and information sharing.
  • Record all calls for service in appropriate logs and databases.
  • Contact, advise, and assist federal and local emergency services response to campus.
  • Refer calls to supervisor, as necessary and required.
  • Has functional responsibility for communications, telecommunications, computer access control systems, alarm systems, identification systems, and routine and emergency information system (EIS) procedure implementation.




Work Interactions


This position reports to the Patrol Sergeant and the Director. This person works independently with limited supervision. The incumbent work with other patrol officers, security guard and student guards.



Requirements and Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • A least 3 years of work experience in a law enforcement, security, or emergency communications related field
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in a tactful, courteous and patient manner in highly stressful situations
  • Previous experience in and responsibility for critical incident response and notification procedures with knowledge of criminal and civil law, and police policies and procedures, including patrol duties and access control systems
  • Documentation of U.S. citizenship and at least 21 years of age
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no violations in the last three ears and able to pass Georgetown's driver's certification
  • Must be able to successfully pass a drug test, physical examination by a medical doctor to University specifications, and extensive psychological testing, as well as a comprehensive background investigation
  • Good typing and computer skills, including word processing (MS Word), spreadsheet (MS Excel) and email
  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain DC Special Police Commission and all required university police training, including successful completion of the Consortium of University Police Academy training (or equivalent)
  • Must possess knowledge to enable interpretation of written material, verbal orders, and computer commands
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, including report writing
  • Internal candidates must be off probation, served with good conduct, have no active disciplinary actions on file, and received Satisfactory or above in all areas of their latest performance review (the internal candidate selected for the position will receive a 5% salary increase)
  • This position is considered as essential under the University Personnel policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call when necessary - the incumbent must be willing and available to work extended, odd, or off hours to achieve the expectations of the Department in order to provide a safe and secure environment to the campus community. This may include rotating tours of duty (day shifts, evening shifts, overnight shifts) with fluctuating days off, according to departmental needs
